Define the distribution of Hendra virus in bat populations.

Dr Hume Field and student preparing to bleed flying foxesThe study will take the form of a series of surveys of targeted bat populations. A description of the geographic and species distribution of Hendra virus (HeV) is advanced with respect to Australia's four common mainland pteropid species, however surveillance of other species has been limited. Thus, sampling of megachiroptera in this project will largely focus on the inadequately surveyed genera of Dobsonia, Macroglossus, Syconycteris, and Nyctimeme. Sampling of microchiroptera (insectivorous bats) will focus on ubiquitous genera across the six families represented in Australia. Photo: C. Smith.
